Today there are many older generations of heaters still out there working beautifully to warm up our pools and spas. We've gone from standard millivolt technology with the free-standing gas pilot, to electronic ignition, and now the lo-nox pool heater that is equipped with a hot surface ignitor. So many changes happened in our industry that we found ourselves in constant training, keeping up with each new heater manual full of changes. In the city of Santa Monica, pool heater repair is not as common as in the San Fernando Valley because the weather is so much more temperate, they do not get as much use. Nevertheless, Spectrum is called out regularly to service them. The reason for change in heater construction had alot to do with Southern Ca Air Quality Management - as they mandated that California pool/spa heaters comply with the new low-carbon, low-nitrous oxide standards. These heaters were quickly dubbed "Lo-Nox", and all manufacturers had to retool their plants and produce higher efficient systems that were affordable and competitive technologically. We recommend that you keep a heater that can be repaired as long as the fee is reasonable; and to replace a heater when necessary. Sometimes it becomes necessary because the cabin rusts out due to water exposure. This does present a fire opportunity becuase debris and leaves under the heater can ignite and spread.
