We recommend the Taylor or Guardex tester that includes discrete analysis of pH, Total Alkalinity, Calc-Magnesium Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid. These values, including temperature, add up to a complex equation dubbed the Langlier Index - which produces a factor that indicates if your swimming pool is in a precipitating condition or a corrosive one. This index forecasts accelerated discoloration of the plaster surface and other staining; or if the water is aggressive due to its acidic state, copper sulfate can strip away from the plumbing and other metal fittings, causing metallic staining as well as potential leaks. Though pools will discolor over time, proper service will lengthen the life of the structure and provide a friendlier swimming environment.
