Manage your pool with weekly testing - either by taking a sample of water into your local pool store, or by learning how to use a test kit. Seek a neutral pH, somewhere between 7.4 and 7.6 pH. These values change though when considering what type of pool suface exists. If plaster, then keeping the pH on the lower side of the range is desirable because the calcium in the plaster will keep raising the level. If fiberglass or vinyl liner, then be careful that the pH doesn't drop too fast as there is no plaster to buffer your additions. keep an Alkalinity range between 80-120ppm as this will provide a buffered environment to mitigate wide swings on the pH scale. Algae in a pool or spa is difficult to contend with as it is a plant form that utilizes sunlight, water, and food to thrive - of which we have plenty of in Northridge. Pool maintenance requires attentive measures towards water chemistry, debris removal and filtration. Balanced water requires a residual of sanitizer with periodic shocking. In the Summer, a weekly shock will oxidize the water and help kill algae spores before they bloom. We recommend a chlorine level of 3-5ppm during hot weather and high pool use. Don't forget to keep a minimum level of Conditioner in the water as well, as this will protect the chlorine from solar rays. And make sure to circulate the pool water and clean the filter when dirty.
