This will cause air to get sucked into the pump, resulting in loss of prime. Then it refills via gravity and goes through the same cycle again. Another obstruction with similar effect is when the skimmer wier gets lodged and doesn't allow water to get into the skimmer throat. This happens when a twig or leaves get accumulate. If you hear an unusually loud cycling sound like this, walk over to the skimmer and see if you notice either of these failures - both easily correctable.
